![]() Disneyland had just opened a couple miles down the road from the Orange, in Anaheim the entire area was developing rapidly. An early advertisement announced the new ministry's appeal: "The Orange Church meets in the Orange Drive-In Theater where even the handicapped, hard of hearing, aged and infirm can see and hear the entire service without leaving their family car."Īs the Schullers embraced their makeshift new venue, the congregation, in turn, came to embrace them. The architecture and technological system built for entertainment could be repurposed, hacked even, to deliver a religious ceremony for the golden age of the car. The efficiencies of the venue were obvious: For cinematic purposes, the drive-in was useful only in the darkness, which meant that it could play an effortlessly dual role, theater by night and church by day. So he set his sights on the tenth: the Orange Drive-In Theatre. Researching the matter further, however, Schuller discovered that the first nine of those options were already in use for other purposes. While making the trip from Illinois, driving on Route 66, the reverend took to a napkin and listed 10 sites that could host his budding ministry. The young couple were to start a ministry in California for that, they needed to find a venue that would host their notional congregation. In 1955, the Reformed Church in America gave a grant of $500 to Reverend Schuller and his wife Arvella. And the origins of the Crystal Cathedral, for all its shine and swagger, are more garage than skyscraper. In that, the Cathedral also seems symbolic of its times.īut if a church is a kind of technology - of media, of communication, of community - then it's fitting that even a megachurch would have a humble startup story. Today, the church ministry announced that the congregation will be moving its services a smaller building, a currently Catholic church, a mile down the road from the Cathedral's compound. The Crystal Cathedral has been in the news most recently for its financial troubles - culminating in bankruptcy, a controversial shift in the the church's leadership structure, and, finally, the sale of the Cathedral itself to a neighboring (Catholic) diocese. It's been at once a place of worship and a TV studio. If Christianity exists to be spread, the Cathedral has existed to do that spreading. ![]() From the church's soaring, sunlit pulpit, the charismatic preacher Reverend Robert Schuller spoke to a sea of worshippers - not just to congregants in the cavernous room itself, his image amplified by a JumboTron, but also, eventually, to a much wider audience via the church's iconic Hour of Power reality show. The structure is neither crystal nor, technically, a cathedral, but it's acted as an archetype for a 20th century phenomenon: the Christian megachurch. The Crystal Cathedral rises like a spaceship out of an impossibly green lawn in Garden Grove, Orange County, California. The interior pulpit of the Crystal Cathedral ( Wikimedia Commons)

Here are the downsides of using paper-based timesheets: There is no denial that manually tracking the time spent on tasks is very inefficient. Stone Keeps were surrounded by thick stone walls (that could be manned) and towers or turrets that served as a lookout tower but could also hold archers and in some cases siege weapons. First stone Keeps were in a rectangular shape and in later centuries they were often replaced with a circular shape. On the ground floor, we could usually find kitchens while the living quarters were on the upper floors. In the center of the Castle was the Keep that was made from thick stone walls and only a few windows. What kind of research did you do for Deadlock Rebels? Creating characters is another favorite part of writing-lots and lots of characters! A big challenge for me is stopping myself from adding too many characters to a story. I love the high energy of them, and the challenge of having a lot of pieces moving around a scene, and trying to make it all work (also, you can add explosions to them). What elements of a story are your favorite to write?Īction scenes are easily my favorite. Even though the novel itself is fairly self-contained, there was always the knowledge that the world around it was widely expansive, and that definitely helped flavor some of the novel’s elements. I generally love anything that bends or blends genres, which Overwatch obviously does a ton of. Were there any specific facets of the Overwatch universe and its characters you were most eager about getting to dig into in your novel? I think futuristic Westerns are especially fun because you can take some of the classic elements-weapons, transportation, a hostile landscape-and get really creative with them. Add a little sci-fi and/or fantasy and you get amazing media like Cowboy Bebop, The Dark Tower book series, Star Wars, etcetera. And, generally, the elements of a Western mix really well with other genres. I’m pretty certain my love of futuristic Westerns started with Brisco County, Jr., a steampunk Western that was one of my favorite TV shows as a kid. Deadlock Rebels is by far the fastest book I’ve ever written, but I’d done some quick-turnaround revisions before, and the characters were so much fun to write that the early drafts came together pretty quickly.īoth Gunslinger Girl and Deadlock Rebels are futuristic Western fiction. The big one was not to be afraid of deadlines. What lessons did you learn from publishing your first novel that carried over to Deadlock Rebels? Thankfully, they liked them, because as soon as I started writing within the world, I didn’t want to leave! The publisher contacted my agent about potentially working on the project, at which point I drafted a couple of sample chapters. ![]() I’d like to think there was some strange, Blizzard-related karma stemming from how much StarCraft and Diablo II I played back in the day, but like most things in publishing, it was a little bit of luck and a little bit of work. How’d you end up in the gaming sphere writing an Overwatch novel? I was incredibly lucky to have an enthusiastic and supportive publishing team for it, as well as a bunch of writer friends to have my back, because publishing your first book can definitely be an emotional rollercoaster! Well, I wrote for a long time before I ever finished a whole novel, to start-I can remember writing as early as sixth grade! It was my second finished manuscript (amongst many, many unfinished ones) that became Gunslinger Girl, my debut. What did the path to becoming an author look like for you? What was publishing your first novel like? We caught up with Lyndsay Ely to discuss the art of novel writing, what it was like to work in tandem with the Overwatch narrative team, and how she captured the voices of our favorite Deadlock rebels. The novel is written by author Lyndsay Ely, who was well-equipped with a wealth of futuristic Western knowledge from the publication of her first novel, Gunslinger Girl, a tale about a bold heroine who takes on “tomorrow’s West.” Wielding this genre-bending expertise, she composed a tale about daring heists, fast money, dangerous alliances, and how the bonds of brotherhood outweigh the burdens of blood. Elizabeth Caledonia Ashe, an opportunistic young thief recently disinherited from her family’s fortune, teams up with local delinquent Jesse McCree and her omnic butler, B.O.B., for a cavalcade of capers. The young upstarts of the Deadlock Gang might not be the heroes the future-possible world of Overwatch needs, but they’re here, regardless, in all of their riotous gunslinging glory.ĭeadlock Rebels is a novel set in the American Southwest of Overwatch during the years of turmoil that followed the Omnic Crisis that explores the founding of the notorious Deadlock Gang. ![]() ![]() Doing that involves a lot of overly emotional dialogue that at least some of the cast don’t really pull off. This first episode though, is largely dedicated to splitting up the crew of the Rocinante and sending them on seperate paths. The show set him up well in season 4 and he’s here, lurking far in the background of season 5’s first episode. The big, dangerous threat of The Expanse season 5 involves the terrorist Marco Inaros. Naomi, unfortunately, seems to have other plans. Instead of worrying about the fate of humanity he’s imagining a happy future where he settles down and retires with Naomi. Amos is on his way to Earth to revisit his past. Alex and Bobby are on Mars taking care of personal business. ![]() The Rocinante is undergoing repairs and upgrades at Fred Johnson’s Tycho station and her crew is taking a break from, well, each other. The time and place of The Expanse season 5 is not long after the events of season 4. The Expanse understands it’s the little things that build a world, it’s the little things that create a time and place. It’s the little things that make a good show great. Another show, a lesser show, might look at how much it costs to make that scene look good and shoot it without the anti-gravity walkers. The characters the camera is focused on don’t even acknowledge them. If they hadn’t included them no one would have noticed they were missing and they added nothing to the dialogue of the scene. They didn’t need to go the extra mile and have extras walking past on the ceiling. To me that corridor scene embodies everything that has made and continues to make The Expanse so great. The Expanse, even in a fairly humdrum exposition dialogue scene, continues to take complete and total advantage of its incredible, outer space sci-fi setting. A simple walk and talk down a corridor will blow your mind as passersby walk on not just the floor but also the ceiling. Yes the first episode of The Expanse season 5 is basically an extended soap opera, but at least it’s a really good soap opera with fantastic production design and incredible special effects. The stunning, spare no expense look and feel of the series helps make up for the fact that, unfortunately, this first episode of the new season plays out a bit like a soap opera. Episode one of The Expanse season 5 may be its most crisply produced yet. Despite ownership changes and platform shifts, season after season the show (which was already one of the best produced series on the streaming schedule) looks better and better. That’s why in season 3 a series like Star Trek: Discovery looks cheaper and cuts more corners than it did in season 1. It’s an unfortunate truth that, in the world of modern streaming television, often the longer a show is on the less budget it has to work with.
